Born and raised in Los Angeles, Roman moved to New York in the mid-70s, and began making handmade stencils and screen prints. Roman’s colorful, traditional images merge Mexican style with Warhol techniques to adorn wood, canvas, metal, and fabric. From artifacts — talismans, tribal masks, religious charms, fetishes, gravestones and even postage stamps — he makes tracings or rubbings, which he stencils onto any of a variety of surfaces. He has created work for Carlos Santana, Madonna, and Keith Richards and his work appears on backdrops for performance artists, the walls of retail stores and nightclubs, sailcloth, upholstery, vans, Bob Marley record albums produced by Island Records, and promotional T-shirts for rock musicians. He lives in San Francisco but keeps a heart and foot in Oaxaca, where he travels each year to celebrate the Day of the Dead at his gallery, La Mano Magica. See more of his work here.
